Test Results: What Should You Do?
Avoid confusion about your medical results
We all know the stress and uncertainty of waiting for a test result. It’s normal to want answers as soon as possible. That’s why in 2016, the 21st Century Cures Act required health care providers to give patients access to their health information without delay.
Thanks to online health portals like My HealtheVet, it’s easier than ever to get results fast. But, unless you’re a medical professional, lab and test results can be confusing. Only your health care team can give you the full picture of what your results mean for you. Here are helpful tips to remember next time you have results available online.
Consider waiting to view your results
Only you can decide if you want to view your results online. You might choose to wait to speak directly with your health care team. If you’re nervous about a test or screening, talk to your health care team in advance. Let them know your concerns and ask when you can expect to hear from them.
Don’t be alarmed
When test results fall outside the typical range, they may be labeled “abnormal.” But abnormal doesn’t always mean there’s cause for concern. Your health care team will know how to interpret your results considering your age, health history, and other health conditions.
Avoid Dr. Google
It can be tempting to look for answers online. But without your health care team’s knowledge and your medical history, those answers can be really misleading. Don’t let incomplete information cause you needless worry and stress. Contact your VA health care team and get answers from the experts who know you.
Reach out
Your health care team can explain your test results and any follow up care you may need. You don’t have to wait to hear from them. Stay engaged in your care by reaching out as soon as your results are available.
Secure Messaging is a great way to contact your VA health care team. You may send a non-urgent, non-emergency message at any time. Your VA health care team should respond to your message(s) within 3 business days. To use the Secure Messaging feature, you must have registered on My HealtheVet as a VA Patient and have a Premium account.
Getting news about your health can be frightening, but it’s important to remember you’re not alone. If you’re feeling anxious, call the Veterans Crisis Line by dialing 988 then press 1.
