Blood Pressure: What to Ask the Doctor

Ask your doctor these questions about hypertension

A Veteran sits in an exam room as a provider takes their blood pressure. If you're managing hypertension, it's important to have good communication with your doctor. As you prepare for your next appointment, consider asking the following questions:

  • What's the meaning of my blood pressure numbers?

  • What's my blood pressure goal?

  • Is there a healthy eating plan to lower my blood pressure and lose weight?

  • Is it safe for me to exercise?

  • What is the name of my medicine? What is the common or generic name?

  • What are the possible side effects of my medicine?

  • What time of day should I take my blood pressure medicine?

  • Should I take it with or without food?

  • What should I do if I forget to take my blood pressure medicine at the recommended time?

These tips can help you and your health care team work together.
