Your Super Bowl Menu Playbook
Scout these videos and prep your game day menu
Whether you're a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, or just a fan of a good game, the Super Bowl is a lot more than football. It's a time for friends and family to come together, celebrate, and eat tasty food. But the Super Bowl doesn't have to be an excuse for overeating, drinking too much, or breaking newly made resolutions.
The best way to avoid eating unhealthy food is to plan your menu. Whether you're hosting or bringing a snack to the party, VA has some tasty recipes to keep you on track.
VA's Healthy Teaching Kitchens offers helpful in-the-kitchen video recipes. Check out these videos to help you 'scout' your game day menu:
Grilled Chicken and Pineapple Kebabs with Grilled Veggies: The warm summer months may be gone. But that doesn't have to stop you from grilling healthy chicken, fruits, and vegetables.
Baked Kale Chips: Olive oil is all you need to turn fresh kale leaves into a deliciously crispy, low calorie snack. Like potato chips, you can't eat just one. They're great for parties and often even a topic of conversation.
Homemade Pizza: This alternative to frozen pizza will offer fresh flavor, less saturated fat and sodium. It also allows for an endless variety of toppings. Use whole wheat dough for additional fiber. Pizza dough also freezes well for future meals.
Chicken Vegetable Stir-Fry: Want to learn some techniques for stir-frying chicken and vegetables? This recipe shows you how to make stir-fry sauce flavored with lemon, ginger, and garlic. It works well with lean beef, pork, shrimp, or tofu.
Red Velvet Cupcakes: In this video, Registered Dietitian Angie Sebree prepares a lightened-up version of red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting.
Most importantly, use your best judgment. "It's okay to indulge. Just use common sense about portion sizes by balancing less healthy choices with healthy options," said Lynn Novorska, MOVE! Dietitian Program Coordinator. "When there's a break in the action, get off the couch and fit in some physical activity of your own."
Don't forget, if you have a My HealtheVet account, you can track your healthy game day meals in your online food journal.
